A woman and her daughter were assaulted with a crowbar in broad daylight on Tuesday 8 october 2019, when they went for a walk in the Durbanville neighborhood of Valmary Park. The daughter was also stabbed during the attack. Claire Whitwam (63) and her daughter Brigette (34) went for a walk around 14:30 with two dogs.
Two attackers approached them on an open field between Legato Street and Langeberg road close to Sonstraalhoogte.  One attacker first beat Claire’s sheepdog with the crowbar and then beat Claire over the head. The attacker then beat Brigette in the face, she tried to protect her head with her hand and a second blow broke three of her fingers.

The second attacker then also stabbed Brigette in the chest causing huge blood loss. The two attackers kept on demanding their belongings. The one attacker then tried to pull Claire’s wedding ring from her finger which was difficult for him because Claire’s knuckles are swollen due to arthritis. He then asked the knife to cut off Claire’s finger but luckily the ring came off at that moment.

The 2 women kept screaming and a woman at a nearby house saw what was happening and called for help from Halt Security. They arrived quickly on the scene and chased the two suspects and managed to catch one. Claire had to get stitches in her head and suffered three broken teeth.

Brigette had to go to an orthopedic surgeon to get treatment to her hand injury. The women did not have money with them and all that was taken were jewelry items.
