SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A person was fatally shot by police Friday evening in Salt Lake City’s Ballpark neighborhood following a call about an armed, possibly suicidal individual.
According to a spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area near Lucy Avenue shortly after 6:30 p.m. They arrived within minutes and positioned themselves around the residence.
The spokesperson said the individual soon emerged from the home holding a weapon “of some sort.” At least one officer then fired, and the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
The case has been referred to Protocol Team Three, which investigates all officer-involved shootings. The officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave during the ongoing probe.
The road remained closed for hours as investigators processed the scene. Police have not released the victim’s identity or further details about the weapon involved.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
