KNYSNA, Western Cape — The 43rd Knysna Oyster Festival is officially underway, drawing thousands of visitors to the Garden Route for ten days of winter festivities. Beyond offering world-class food, sport, and entertainment, the 43rd Knysna Oyster Festival is poised to inject millions of rand into the local economy while creating vital opportunities for small businesses and conservation initiatives.

The highly anticipated event kicked off with a vibrant Sea Cadet and South African Army parade down Main Street. What began 43 years ago as a simple strategy to attract tourists during the quiet winter months has evolved into a major tourism draw. According to festival organizers, the economic impact is indispensable for the region.

“Knysna would have a very bleak winter without the festival,” an event spokesperson noted. “It is a must-have for the economy. It brings millions of rand into the town with the influx of people; one cannot imagine Knysna without the Oyster Festival.”

Empowering Local Entrepreneurs

A major highlight of this year’s event is the focus on local entrepreneurs through the Neighbourhood Makers hub. This initiative brings together handcrafted products from small local businesses, giving them access to a massive customer base they might not otherwise reach.

A representative for Neighbourhood Makers explained that the concept allows local members to participate in a festival of this magnitude without the need for extensive staff or financial backing to run a full standalone display.

“We onboard their stock for them and sell it in our consignment tent,” the spokesperson said. “It brings them an income, gets marketing behind them, and really is a great place to showcase your product at the Knysna Oyster Festival.”

Championing Regional Conservation

The festival also serves as a crucial platform for regional organizations making a tangible environmental difference. The Sandpipers Honorary Rangers are on-site, raising funds for various nature conservation projects.

A spokesperson for the Sandpipers highlighted their diverse, hands-on initiatives, which include protecting seahorses, preventing garbage and rubbish from flowing into the ocean and lagoon, and conducting hiking patrols to clean up windfall and debris.

A Marathon of Sporting Excellence

In addition to the culinary, cultural, and environmental attractions, the festival maintains its strong sporting tradition. Thousands of runners are gearing up to participate in the iconic Knysna Forest Marathon, cementing the event’s status as a comprehensive celebration of the region’s community, economy, and natural beauty.
