  • Putin’s visit to Johannesburg, SA to attend the BRICS Summit:

With the BRICS Summit set to begin from 25th July, the Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top government officials would come to SA after a gap of over five years. Putin would be part of the annual summit which will conclude on 27th July. Putin’s last visit to South Africa was five years back when Durban hosted the BRICS Summit.

  • Six miners killed in Palabora mine fire:

Six miners have been reportedly killed in a mine fire that spread at a copper mine operated by Palabora Mining Company. The fire broke out at one of the underground conveyor belts. It is feared that the death toll may further increase. This is the latest in a series of tragedies to have hit South Africa’s Mining Industry. So far, 54 people have lost their lives in various incidents in South African mines in 2018.

  • Cape Town Dam Systems observe an eighth consecutive week of increase in water levels:

The Western Cape Province can breathe easy now. The latest downpour on 12th July has helped immensely. The current water levels of all the dams combined are at 54.7%. It’s a far cry from the lowly 26% water levels just a year ago.

The biggest success has come at the Province’s biggest dam, Theewaterskloof Dam. Cape Town Dam System consists of Wemmershoek, Voelvlei, Steenbras Upper and Lower, Theewaterskloof Dam, and Berg River Dam.

  • Another hike in petrol prices likely in August:

As per leading Analysts, the people of SA must brace up for yet another increase in petrol prices I the month of August. Rising fuel costs have already been a bone of contention for quite some time in South Africa and continue to be a major political issue with the opposition blaming it on skyrocketing government fuel levies. The
Government, however, maintains that the unstable crude oil market is the culprit.

  • MTN sells its 100% stake of MTN Cyprus to Monaco Telecom SA in 1.4 Billion Rand deal:

MTN, South Africa’s biggest wireless carrier move is seen as a part of company’s pledge to remove unwanted parts of its business. Experts have welcomed the move with some saying that selling the Cyprus Unit at a decent valuation will further simplify the brand in Cyprus for three more years.
