Suspect arrested for kidnapping boy

A 39-year-old suspect was arrested in the Umlazi area for kidnapping an 11-year-old boy on 22 April.

The suspect was arrested at V section, Umlazi after the members followed up on information about his whereabouts on 30 April 2016. The arrested suspect will appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 3 May 2016.

On 22 April 2016 at about 20:30 an 11-year-old boy was with his aunt at her place of residence at Bomvini area, Ngwelezane when they were approached by the suspect. It is alleged that the suspect entered the house by force looking for his ex-girlfriend.

His ex-girlfriend was not present at the time and he demanded to take the child away. The suspect was in possession of a container containing petrol and he was allegedly threatening to burn down the house. He eventually took the child away using his VW Golf as a getaway vehicle. A case of kidnapping was opened at Empangeni police station for further investigation.

Empangeni detectives worked tirelessly searching for the child and information was received about his whereabouts at Umlazi. An operation consisting of Durban Hostage negotiators, Provincial Tracking Task Team, Special Task Force and Empangeni detectives was conducted that led to the arrest at Umlazi.

The child was found unharmed and was re-united with his mother while the suspect was charged for kidnapping.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded police for saving the child and arresting the suspect. She further warned the criminals . “I am going to ensure that all those who commit crimes against woman and children are taken into custody. Our mandate is to protect women and children from the abusers,” she said.
