
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Nieuwoudtville has arrested a 21-year-old male suspect in connection with the illegal harvesting of endangered protected plants at a local nature reserve.
The incident occurred on June 6, 2026, at approximately 16:30, when park rangers contacted the Nieuwoudtville SAPS to report a suspicious individual inside the park. Following a swift response by law enforcement officers, the suspect was apprehended on the scene.
Upon his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of endangered protected flora valued at a substantial amount. He has been formally charged with a violation of the Northern Cape Nature Conservation Act 9 of 2009.
The accused remains in police custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Calvinia Magistrate’s Court.
The local District Commissioner commended the SAPS members and rangers involved in the operation for their swift and effective response. Addressing the incident, the Commissioner issued a stern warning to individuals involved in environmental crimes, emphasizing that the unique fauna and flora of the Namakwa region are strictly protected. He noted that the area’s biodiversity constitutes a natural heritage for the local communities and will not be plundered.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
