A North West teacher has been dismissed after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a pupil, sparking renewed concerns over the rise of inappropriate relationships between educators and learners.

The case came to light after an explicit video and photos allegedly showing the teacher and the pupil circulated within the school. A fellow educator reportedly reported the incident to the principal, leading to an investigation and the teacher’s subsequent termination.

National Teachers’ Organization Condemns Abuse of Trust

In an interview with [News Outlet], Mr. Basil Manuel, Executive Director of the National Professional Teachers’ Organization of South Africa (NAPTOSA), expressed shock and dismay over the incident.

“There is a certain level of disbelief that people still do this in such a brazen fashion, as though they believe nothing will happen to them,” Manuel said. “This is a clear abuse of authority and trust. Parents place their children in our care, and such behavior is a betrayal of that responsibility.”

Manuel emphasized the need for collective action, urging parents, fellow teachers, and learners to report misconduct immediately rather than allowing it to spread as gossip.

Calls for Greater Accountability and Awareness

When asked about the underlying causes of such behavior, Manuel noted that while some students may appear willing, the power imbalance between adults and minors makes such relationships exploitative.

“These are still children who can be swayed by gifts or attention, but it is the adult’s duty to act responsibly,” he stated.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts by NAPTOSA and other educational bodies to reinforce ethical standards through workshops and legal education. However, he acknowledged that some individuals still evade accountability due to systemic gaps.

Are Current Consequences Enough?

While the accused teacher’s name will be added to the Department of Social Development’s Child Protection Register, Manuel questioned whether penalties alone are sufficient deterrents.

“I don’t know if we will ever have enough deterrents, but awareness is our biggest weapon,” he said, calling for stronger community and institutional vigilance.

A Message to Educators

Manuel concluded with a message to teachers:

“To the vast majority of ethical educators—thank you. But we must continue standing up against those who tarnish our profession. Never tolerate such behavior, because one wrong individual damages us all.”

The case has reignited discussions on safeguarding measures in schools, with advocates pushing for faster vetting processes and better reporting mechanisms to protect learners.
