KLERKSDORP — A Klerksdorp Regional Court has handed down a 25-year prison sentence to 49-year-old Thembela Titshala following his conviction for rape. The sentencing, which was finalized on Monday, 29 June 2026, marks the conclusion of a case that Acting North West Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo has publicly praised as a significant victory for justice.
The charges originate from a violent encounter on the night of Saturday, 17 February 2024. Court proceedings revealed that at approximately 22:10, a 35-year-old woman was walking home alone from a neighborhood tavern. During her walk, she heard an acquaintance call her by name and stopped to acknowledge the individual, whom she recognized.
Although the victim rejected Titshala’s offer to walk with her, he subsequently attacked her. Evidence presented during the trial showed that the accused forcibly grabbed the woman and dragged her into his shack, where the rape occurred.
Following the report of the crime, law enforcement launched a comprehensive investigation. This thorough police work led to Titshala’s arrest and successful prosecution. Major General Naidoo’s endorsement of the ruling highlights the provincial police’s commitment to holding gender-based violence perpetrators accountable, resulting in the substantial 25-year incarceration term.
