Residents and business owners in Bloemhof and Christiana are assessing the extensive damage caused by severe flooding along the Vaal River. The disaster has displaced hundreds, destroyed crops, and left properties in ruins, with recovery expected to take years.
More than 100 households were severely affected, and thousands of hectares of farmland were submerged. While water levels have receded, the aftermath remains dire. Local guest house owner CS May described the flooding as “unprecedented,” with water reaching the second floor of his property, causing an estimated R1 million in damages.
Businesses and residents face further challenges as insurance companies refuse claims in flood-prone areas. Meanwhile, the Northwest Provincial Government has allocated R50 million for relief efforts, though officials admit it may not be enough.
Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) MEC Oageng Molapisi confirmed six fatalities, mostly in the Moretele area, and highlighted widespread infrastructure damage, including collapsed roads and bridges. Disaster teams are providing temporary housing and food parcels, but frustrations grow over the slow response.
As cleanup begins, communities brace for a long road to recovery.
