Prevention and Combating of Hate Speech Bill must be fast-tracked, says Sanco
The Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, frequently opposes any form of racism, yet openly incites barbaric retaliation and, by definition, commits hate speech.

The draft Prevention and Combating of Hate Speech Bill must be fast-tracked in view of the “resurgence of racism as well as deteriorating race relations”, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) said.

“While consensus is necessary to tackle the demon of racism, an aggressive programme to eradicate it must be adopted and rolled out to stamp the tide of barbarism,” Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said in a statement.

He called for tough sentences for two men who allegedly assaulted farmworker Victor Mlotshwa and forced him into a coffin.

Mahlangu welcomed reports that the two men allegedly involved in the incident near the Komati power station in Mpumalanga had abandoned their bail application until their next court appearance on January 25.

There was no place in society for those who undermined the vision of a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic society, as well as respect for human rights and dignity.

“Farmworkers and vulnerable farm dwellers like Mlotshwa whose daily experiences are worst atrocities must be protected against abuse and senseless violence that undermine harmonious, peaceful co-existence and the rule of law,” Mahlangu said.

What one person might regard as free speech, another might use as excuse to prosecute that person. And let us be realistic: This Bill is not going to be used against the Malemas and Zumas. This Bill is going to be used against the white man voicing his opinion on Twitter and Facebook.
