MATLALA — Following a tense confrontation involving a cash-in-transit escort along the R567, two men are set to appear at the Matlala Periodical Court facing serious firearm charges. The Gamatlala police investigation into the Seshego-Gilead Road shooting has culminated in the arrest of the suspects, who are now navigating the legal process after an alleged ambush attempt.

The sequence of events unfolded on the morning of Monday, 15 June 2026, at roughly 11:30 in Mabopane Village within the Gamatlala policing area. A 52-year-old male driver was navigating an open Toyota bakkie, tasked with escorting a cash-in-transit vehicle. According to law enforcement reports, the situation escalated when a white Toyota Venture aggressively overtook the transit truck.

During the overtaking maneuver, a passenger inside the white Toyota Venture allegedly aimed a gun directly at the cash-in-transit truck. The transit security personnel quickly reacted, returning fire in a shootout. Outgunned, the attackers abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot, initially seeking cover in a nearby residence before disappearing into the surrounding bushland.

Detectives from the Matlala police focused their efforts on the deserted white Toyota Venture. By tracking down the registered owner of the vehicle, investigators secured critical intelligence that led them directly to the driver. Officers subsequently apprehended a 32-year-old suspect who was suffering from gunshot wounds.

While in custody, the injured 32-year-old cooperated with authorities and directed them to the whereabouts of his accomplice. Police swiftly moved to the disclosed location, where they discovered a 36-year-old man. This second suspect was also nursing injuries and was caught in possession of a gun, leading to his immediate arrest.

Both men are officially slated to make their court appearance on Thursday, 18 June 2026. They are jointly facing charges related to the pointing of a firearm and the illegal possession of a firearm. As part of the ongoing docket, authorities have confiscated the recovered weapon as well as the white Toyota Venture used during the alleged incident.
