The Gauteng government will have to pay urgent attention to at least fifteen other schools in the south of the province to prevent any more tragedies, similar to the one that transpired at Driehoek high school from occurring.

The media reported that there is a building at Roodepoort high school that may have structural problems and that poses a risk to learners’ safety.

On 4 February 2019, the FF Plus requested that the Gauteng Departments of Infrastructure Development and Education must send structural engineers to the schools in the province to make sure that the schools are safe for learners and teachers .

And on 5 February 2019, it was brought to the FF Plus’s attention that there are more schools in the south of the province that may face similar disasters due to the fact that their infrastructure has not been properly maintained.

The FF Plus insists that engineers must urgently be sent to the following schools:

1. Hoërskool Overvaal
2. Laerskool Rissiville
3. Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark
4. Laerskool Frikkie Meyer
5. Laerskool Totius
6. Hoërskool Die Anker
7. Pinedene Primary School
8. Laerskool Eligwa
9. Hendrik Vanderbijl Primary School
10. Laerskool DF Malherbe
11. Hoërskool Transvalia
12. Hoërskool Drie Riviere
13. Hoërskool Suncrest
14. Vaal High
15. Laerskool Handhawer

The information was provided to the FF Plus by a source who has worked with schools for more than 15 years and who has also served on the governing bodies of several schools.

The FF Plus finds this extremely disturbing and insists that the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, must intervene at once to ensure that structural engineers are deployed across the province immediately.

The FF Plus will also send letters with the relevant information to the Premier, the MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, and the MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi. The FF Plus is currently busy collecting the latest complaints and photos of the relevant school buildings.

The parents, children and teachers of these schools are requested to remain calm and to assist the FF Plus in addressing the problem. Anyone who has any more information regarding the schools are welcome to send an email to the FF Plus at the following address: [email protected].
