Drilling technology solutions provider Rosond of Midrand celebrated one year Zero Harm at Tumela Mine on 27 October. Together with Dishaba, Tumela forms part of Anglo American Platinum’s Amandelbult Complex near Rustenburg in North West Province. Rosond’s Tumela management team comprises Area Manager Andre du Toit and Site Manager Dieter Schmucker.

“This is a major achievement for the team and testament to the strong health and safety culture at Rosond. It is also significant given the rigorous standards upheld by our client, and an operation at which we have been working at for over 20 years,” comments Rosond Safety Manager Andre Kleynhans.

Rosond is conducting pack grouting operations at Tumela. Grouting services are one of the foundations on which Rosond has built a reputation in the mining industry and is a critical part of its service offering.

The company has also been at the forefront of inventive measures and designs in the grouting industry. From OEM equipment including pumps and grout plants, it has developed a grouting system that is cost-effective and efficient. Constant improvements are being made, including the addition of telematics, remote monitoring and support services.

“We cater for clients using grout packs for primary and secondary support systems, meaning less reliance on timber poles for support, thus reducing risks, fire hazards and shaft conveyance time. We also provide grout for haulage, winch bed and waiting place construction. Our clients are very reliant on grout pack support for their business models to succeed and we form an integral part of the value chain,” highlights Rosond Director Carlos Da Silva.

“We minimise downtime and ensure safe, on-time service delivery, which is key. As more clients are looking at alternative primary support options, grouting can become a necessary service required by more mining houses in the future,” adds Da Silva.

The latest safety record by Rosond follows its celebration of one year Zero Harm at its diamond drilling operation at Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen mine near Kathu in the Northern Cape in July. Kleynhans attributes both these achievements to a culture of caring and responsibility inculcated on all Rosond’s operational sites.

“Anyone at any time can stop somebody who is doing something unsafe, so nobody is injured. At the end of the day, we all go home safe to our families,” says Kleynhans. “We are very proud of our safety culture and aim to keep our employees safe at all times,” concludes Rosond MD Ricardo Ribeiro.
