KLARINET, Mpumalanga — The Klarinet community in Emalahleni is demanding the immediate removal of foreign national shops following the tragic deaths of two family members allegedly linked to contaminated food. Tensions have escalated in the Mpumalanga region as residents take action to shut down informal retailers, citing severe public health and safety concerns.
The situation in the Klarinet area has grown increasingly tense as community members go from shop to shop, asking foreign nationals operating in the area to close their businesses and remove their stock. According to residents leading the operation, the protests are strictly non-violent. They maintain that they are simply asking the shop owners to take out their merchandise rather than engaging in physical confrontations.
The unrest was triggered by a devastating incident involving the deaths of two family members, including a four-year-old child and their 40-year-old uncle. A local community leader explained that the tragedy unfolded after the uncle purchased food items from a nearby shop run by a foreign national. The uncle reportedly gave the food to the four-year-old child. Shortly after consuming the items, both fell severely ill and were rushed to a local clinic, where they were pronounced dead. Medical professionals at the clinic confirmed that the contaminated food was the cause of the fatalities.
In response to the escalating situation, the local government has stepped in to manage the crisis and maintain public order. eMalahleni Local Municipality Speaker Millicent Shabangu addressed the community’s grievances, which included concerns over illegal immigration and the sale of unsafe or substandard goods. Shabangu confirmed that the municipality has officially received a formal memorandum from the residents detailing these demands.
To ensure the situation does not spiral into bloodshed, the municipality has deployed law enforcement officers to the area. “We are making sure that there is no killing of people and no violence,” Shabangu stated, expressing deep concern over the tragedy and noting that the loss of young lives is particularly devastating for the municipality.
Shabangu also clarified that the local municipality regularly conducts its own operations regarding foreign nationals operating within Emalahleni to ensure compliance with local bylaws and trade regulations. For now, a heavy police presence remains in Klarinet as the community continues to demand the closure of the shops while the municipality reviews the formal demands submitted by the residents.
