MPUMALANGA — A 32-year-old rhino poaching suspect was arrested in Kruger National Park late Sunday night following an armed confrontation with field rangers in the Pretoriuskop section of the reserve.
According to a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident occurred at approximately 23:55 on Sunday, 05 July 2026. Field Rangers were conducting a routine observation patrol when they encountered a group of four suspected rhino poachers. The rangers initiated a pursuit in an attempt to apprehend the individuals, which quickly escalated into a shootout.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds. The injured 32-year-old male was apprehended at the scene and was found in possession of a rifle. A spokesperson for park authorities confirmed that a second firearm, believed to have been abandoned by one of the fleeing suspects, was recovered a few meters from the initial confrontation site.
The remaining three suspects managed to evade the rangers during the pursuit and remain at large. The injured suspect was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment under strict police guard. He is expected to appear before a court once he has been declared medically fit to stand trial.
The South African Police Service, working in close collaboration with park authorities, continues to actively investigate the matter. Joint efforts and operations are currently underway to trace and apprehend the three outstanding suspects who fled the scene.
