MIDDDELBURG, MPUMALANGA — Four people have lost their lives and eight others were hospitalized following a catastrophic nine-vehicle pileup along the R555 near Middelburg on Monday afternoon.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison reported that the chaos began when a large articulated truck, en route from Middelburg to Emalahleni, seemingly lost control. The heavy rig slammed into a passenger car, instantly triggering a violent chain reaction as surrounding traffic swerved to avoid the initial impact.
Compounding the disaster, the collision dislodged steel cargo from the truck. Multiple unsuspecting motorists subsequently crashed into one another and slammed into the scattered metal debris that littered the roadway.
Emergency responders rushed to the chaotic scene to extract the victims and manage the extensive wreckage. Authorities confirmed that five individuals were transported to medical facilities in Middelburg and Emalahleni with serious injuries, while three others were treated for minor wounds.
Officials detailed that the massive wreckage ultimately involved nine distinct vehicles: the articulated truck, four light delivery vehicles (LDVs), one sport utility vehicle (SUV), and three additional motor vehicles.
Traffic officers have cordoned off the affected stretch of the regional route as forensic experts and investigators launch a comprehensive probe into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The provincial department confirmed that the official investigation into the root cause of the crash is actively underway.
