Two foreign nationals were arrested in Nelspruit on Friday, June 5, 2026, following a joint law enforcement operation that resulted in the recovery of nearly R2 million worth of illicit cigarettes in Mpumalanga.
The arrests began when a multidisciplinary task team intercepted a Toyota Hilux in Nelspruit on Friday morning. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered 50 master cases of illicit cigarettes valued at over R500,000. The two suspects, foreign nationals aged 35 and 43, were arrested at the scene.
The operation was the culmination of an intelligence-driven surveillance initiative launched after authorities received information regarding illegal activities at a storage facility in White River on Thursday, June 4. Following the tip-off, police secured a search warrant for the premises and waited to execute it immediately after a delivery was made.
A task team comprising the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit, White River K9, and Divergent Operations closely monitored vehicle movements in the area, ultimately identifying and tracking the Toyota Hilux to its interception point.
Following the arrests, the task team proceeded to the White River storage facility to execute the search warrant. They were accompanied by officials from the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs division and the Nelspruit Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).
During the search of the facility, investigators seized an additional 87 master cases and 45 cartons of illicit cigarettes, with an estimated street value of more than R1.2 million. Combined with the initial vehicle seizure, the total value of the confiscated contraband is estimated at nearly R2 million.
The two suspects are currently in police custody being processed for their alleged roles in the illegal distribution of tobacco products. They are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 8, 2026.
