President Cyril Ramaphosa will welcome Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto to the Union Buildings on Thursday for a landmark State Visit aimed at elevating bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership and accelerating economic integration between two of Africa’s most influential economies.
The high-level engagement, described by the Presidency as “reciprocal and consequential,” builds on previous exchanges in 2021 and 2022 and signals a deliberate effort to deepen cooperation on trade, investment, regional stability, and continental development priorities under the African Union agenda.
“South Africa regards Kenya as a key strategic partner in East Africa,” the Presidency stated. “The strategic importance of bilateral relations underlines our intention to elevate the nature of the relationship to that of a Strategic Partnership.”
Kenya currently stands as South Africa’s largest trading partner on the continent outside the Southern African Development Community (SADC). In 2025 alone, South African exports to Kenya reached approximately R11.1 billion, while imports from Kenya totaled R464 million. More than 75 South African enterprises maintain operations across Kenya’s financial services, ICT, energy, logistics, retail, and hospitality sectors.
Expanded Cooperation Through New Agreements
During the visit, leaders are expected to sign six additional Memoranda of Understanding, covering sectors such as renewable energy, digital infrastructure, agricultural value chains, and transport logistics. These additions will bring the total number of active bilateral agreements between the two nations to 34.
Discussions will also review progress under the Joint Commission for Cooperation—the principal framework guiding bilateral engagement—and explore synergies under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Priority infrastructure initiatives, including the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, are anticipated to feature prominently in talks on regional connectivity and investment mobilization.
Business Forum to Catalyze Private Sector Engagement
Following official talks and a joint media briefing, Presidents Ramaphosa and Ruto will co-chair the South Africa-Kenya Business Forum at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. The forum will convene senior government officials and private sector leaders to identify concrete opportunities for joint ventures, supply chain integration, and cross-border investment.
“People-to-people ties continue to strengthen this partnership,” noted a senior diplomatic source. “Kenya’s 90-day visa waiver for South African passport holders has significantly boosted tourism, academic exchanges, and business mobility—a model we hope to see reciprocated and expanded.”
A Shared Vision for Continental Leadership
Beyond bilateral gains, the State Visit underscores both nations’ commitment to advancing Africa’s development agenda. From climate-resilient infrastructure to peace and security architecture in the Great Lakes and Horn of Africa regions, Pretoria and Nairobi are aligning strategies to amplify African agency in multilateral forums.
As the two leaders conclude Thursday’s engagements, the outcome is expected to set a new benchmark for intra-African diplomacy—demonstrating how strategic partnerships, grounded in mutual economic interest and shared continental vision, can drive sustainable growth and integration across the African continent.
