A 31-year-old foreign national was arrested on Sunday, 10 May 2026, for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition following a stop and search operation by the Monontsha Border Police.

At approximately 15:30, officers stationed at the Monontsha Border Post were conducting routine enforcement duties when they observed an unknown male attempting to cross from South Africa into Lesotho.

The officers intercepted the individual and requested his travel documents. Although the suspect produced a valid passport, officers proceeded with a physical search of his person and belongings. During the search, a firearm with live ammunition was found concealed on his waist.

The suspect failed to produce a valid license for the firearm. He was immediately placed under arrest.

The seized firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it was used in other crimes. The suspect is expected to appear soon in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court.
