A 24-year-old woman is expected to appear in court on Friday following the discovery of an abandoned newborn baby in the Riverside location earlier this week.
According to police reports, the infant—a baby boy—was found on Monday by a shepherd in a field near Riverside. The shepherd alerted local authorities, who launched an investigation into the abandonment.
The suspect was traced and subsequently arrested at her residence in Mandela Park, near Phuthaditjhaba. She has been formally charged with attempted murder.
The woman is scheduled to make her first appearance before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 19 February 2026.
