
The Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) has launched an investigation into a horrific rape case after a 60-year-old woman was brutally assaulted and raped in her home in Bothaville.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on Saturday, 26 July 2025, at approximately 12:15 PM, when Bothaville police responded to a distress call. Upon arrival, officers found the victim bleeding heavily from her head.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the woman had just entered her home when she was ambushed by an unknown African male suspect. The assailant allegedly struck her three times on the head with a hammer before raping her. The victim sustained severe head injuries and was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in Welkom due to the seriousness of her condition.
Authorities have confiscated the hammer believed to have been used in the attack. No arrests have been made yet, but police confirm that investigations are ongoing.
