Tensions flared outside the Bauba Chrome Mine in Phokeng near Rustenburg as local residents protested over alleged unfair employment practices, leaving many workers unable to enter the mine for their morning shift.

Frustrated community members gathered outside the mine, demanding answers from management. According to residents, the mine has been hiring workers from outside the area while neglecting local job seekers.

“Our children are not working,” said one protester. “The problem is the CLO (Community Liaison Officer) and the community manager—they don’t want to give us opportunities. When we ask, they say the mine is fully employed, but we can’t accept that.”

Protesters claim that only about 10% of the mine’s employees are locals, leaving many in the community without job opportunities. They also allege that proper hiring procedures for employment verification, are being ignored.

“We are going to camp here until the mine gives us the necessary attention,” vowed one resident.

A local councilor has urged mine management to engage with the community, emphasizing that their concerns must be heard. “The community came here peacefully, asking to be included in the mining operations,” the councilor said. “Those making decisions have been reluctant to address these issues.”

Mine management has agreed to meet with residents on Thursday in an effort to resolve the dispute. Meanwhile, protesters remain determined to stay until their demands are met.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions between mining companies and local communities over employment equity and economic inclusion in South Africa’s mining sector.
