Concerns are mounting over the deteriorating conditions at Witrand Psychiatric Hospital in in Potchefstroom, North West, with staff and patients reportedly suffering due to inadequate resources, food shortages, and failing infrastructure. Anonymous workers have come forward, alleging neglect that they claim is endangering both patients and employees.
Staff Speak Out: “An Environment About to Become Life-Threatening”
Employees, who requested anonymity for fear of victimization, revealed shocking conditions at the facility.
“Patients don’t have nutritious food, and there’s no proper clothing for winter—even in summer, it’s a problem,” one worker said. “The working conditions must improve because we can’t function in a hospital without proper equipment. We’re in an environment that’s becoming life-threatening.”
Staff also raised concerns about the impact on mentally ill patients, who rely on the hospital for care. “If the department doesn’t supply adequate food and equipment, patients go hungry, get sick, and some even die,” a worker claimed.
High Staff Turnover and Low Morale
The hospital is reportedly losing skilled professionals at an alarming rate due to poor working conditions and mismanagement.
“The challenges here are very painful,” another employee stated. “Witrand is losing quality professionals because staff don’t want to work here anymore. Resignations are at an all-time high.”
Workers allege that crumbling infrastructure and administrative failures have contributed to declining morale.
Health Department Denies Allegations
The provincial Department of Health has refuted the claims, insisting that services remain functional.
“The laundry department is operational and provides clean linen and clothing,” a spokesperson said. “When machines break, we have contingency plans. We’ve also procured 40 geysers to ensure warm water is always available.”
Regarding food shortages and patient deaths, the department stated: “Allegations of fatalities due to lack of food must be confirmed by clinicians—it’s not something that can simply be alleged.”
The department acknowledged delays in repairing boilers, citing unsuccessful bidding processes that required re-advertisement.
Calls for Intervention
With staff and patients reportedly suffering, advocates are demanding urgent government intervention to address the hospital’s systemic issues. Witrand Psychiatric Hospital, a key facility for mental health and substance rehabilitation, remains under scrutiny as allegations of neglect persist.
