Riverlea High School in southern Johannesburg reopened today after a fire gutted 11 classrooms last week in a suspected arson attack. Police have opened a case, and investigations are ongoing.

With classrooms destroyed, the school has implemented contingency plans, including housing students in the school hall and deploying mobile classrooms. Gauteng Education Department spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that four mobile units have been provided for Grade 8 learners, with furniture expected by the end of the day.

Sanitation remains a concern after a bathroom was damaged in the fire. Mabona said boys are currently using hall toilets, with chemical toilets and mobile units to be provided soon.

Authorities urged students to remain focused, especially Grade 12s preparing for exams. Mabona emphasized discipline, stating, “Learners need to be in class—this is a place of learning, not disruption.”

The incident is part of a broader trend of school infrastructure attacks in the region. While Raleigh High is not classified as high-risk, the department is working with community safety patrols and police to enhance security.

Updates on the police investigation are expected as the community seeks answers. For now, the school is determined to continue teaching despite the challenges.
