JOHANNESBURG — A major OR Tambo International Airport drug arrest was executed by border authorities on Friday, June 26, 2026, after intercepting a 23-year-old South African woman suspected of smuggng narcotics on a flight to Japan.
Acting on targeted operational intelligence, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Police identified the suspect as she prepared to board her international connection. Preliminary travel records reveal that the woman had initially completed a domestic flight before returning to the terminal to catch her direct outbound journey to Tokyo.
Following the interception, law enforcement escorted the suspect for a mandatory medical evaluation. Radiographic imaging, specifically X-rays, visually confirmed the presence of suspected drug-filled capsules concealed within her body. At the time authorities took her into custody, the woman had already passed 28 of the suspected parcels.
Medical professionals continue to monitor the suspect under strict clinical supervision as the elimination process remains ongoing. All 28 retrieved capsules have been formally logged into the SAPS exhibit management system. Forensic analysts will now test the substances to determine the exact classification of the narcotics and calculate their estimated street value.
The 23-year-old remains detained in police holding and is scheduled to make her first court appearance at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 29, 2026. She faces formal charges relating to dealing in drugs.
The successful interception highlights the SAPS’s ongoing operational directive to dismantle transnational trafficking syndicates and secure South Africa’s ports of entry against the movement of illicit substances.
