Operation Basadi kicked off with a zealous start in Helenvale on the morning of 18 August 2018, with the Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga and the Chief of Police, Ms Yolande Faro at the helm of the operation.
Station Commander of SAPS Humewood, Brig Leonie Bentley gave a short overview including successes thus far.
The Cluster Commander, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile, his management team, the CPF Chairperson and other role players were present. The CPF thanked the police for securing good sentences for gang affiliates and expressed their appreciation to the detectives for the dedication and commitment in ensuring these sentences.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Ntshinga appealed to the CPF that together we need to address the socio economic problems that are plaguing this area.
“Poverty and unemployment is very rife and are contributory factors in the increase of crime and gang activities in this area. Other government bodies need to get involved to address this problem.” Said Lt. General Ntshinga. “It is not only the responsibility of the police alone, communities need to stop attacking the police and throwing stones at police. We are here for their protection and security”, added Lt Gen Ntshinga.
