Pretoria : 25 July 2016 – During this past weekend two more people, a prison long-serving prison warder and a woman close to Radovan Krecjir and were arrested for their alleged involvement to break Radovan Krejcir out of the Zonderwater prison.
In March this year, detectives responsible for the investigation of cases against Radovan Krecjir and several other accused uncovered an elaborate and possibly a deadly plot to break Krecjir out of prison.
This revelation led to arrest of three people in April, including Krecjir, a Zonderwater Correctional Services Officer, Solly Metlae and Sandile Mdumbe.
On Friday, 22 July 2016 a senior prison official Martinus Johannes Hendrik Herbst (49) was arrested at the prison. The following day, Marissa Christopher (37), who is believed to be close to Krecjir went to visit him in prison and she was subsequently arrested. The latest two accused are alleged to have also formed part of plot to help Krecjir escape.
Herbst and Christopher both appeared in the Kempton Park Regional Court 2 on charges of defeating the ends of justice, corruption and conspiracy to aid a prisoner to escape from lawful custody. The matter is postponed to 26 July 2016 for a formal bail application but the State will be opposing bail.
