Melsoft Academy is thrilled to announce the resounding success of our first-ever annual virtual hackathon! This groundbreaking event, a pioneering effort in South Africa’s tech landscape, brought together over 200 passionate developers, showcasing incredible talent and innovative solutions. The energy, creativity, and collaborative spirit throughout the event were truly inspiring.

Tackling Youth Unemployment with AI

Our hackathon aimed to address a critical challenge facing South Africa: youth unemployment. We challenged participants to develop AI-powered solutions that could meaningfully impact this pressing issue. The response was overwhelming, exceeding our expectations in both the number of applicants and the quality of the submitted projects. Fifteen teams, comprised of exceptionally talented individuals, dedicated their time and expertise to crafting innovative solutions, demonstrating the power of technology to create positive social change.

The Journey: From Kick-off to Celebration

The hackathon unfolded over a dynamic two-day period, beginning with a crucial kick-off webinar on September 27th at 7:00 AM. This session, hosted by the esteemed Mbali Puso (link to YouTube video of kickoff webinar), set the stage for the intense and rewarding journey ahead. Participants were energized and ready to tackle the challenges before them.

The initial progress presentation session, held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on the same day, provided an early glimpse into the innovative ideas taking shape. Day two, September 28th, saw the momentum build. From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, teams presented their progress again, showcasing the significant advancements made. The afternoon was a whirlwind of activity. At 3:00 PM, the submission deadline arrived, marking the culmination of days of intense coding, brainstorming, and collaboration. Immediately following, the judging session commenced, with our esteemed panel of experts carefully evaluating each project’s innovation, feasibility, and potential impact.

The excitement reached fever pitch as the live judging and awards ceremony commenced at 5:00 PM and concluded at 7:00 PM. This highly anticipated event, captured in its entirety and available for viewing here, celebrated the achievements of all participants and announced the winners.

The competition was fierce, with each team demonstrating exceptional talent and dedication. After careful consideration, our judges selected the following winners:
