Women arrested in bank with fake ID

Two women who were arrested in a bank, allegedly trying to draw thousands of rand with the use of a fake identity document, appeared in court on Monday.

Reeny Mathe, 55, appeared in the Stellenbosch District Court, with her accomplice, Queen Xorile, age unknown.

Defence attorney Neil Slabber assured the court that Mathe had no previous convictions, outstanding arrest warrants or pending criminal cases.

She was released on bail of R4 000.

Prosecutor Berryl Boonzaaier told the court that Xorile in fact had three previous convictions for fraud, and that the State would oppose her release on bail.

Both appeared before magistrate Lungelo Juma, who remanded Xorile to October 6, and warned Mathe to return to court the same day for her second appearance.

The purpose of Xorile’s remand was to enable the State to probe her background, and confirm her address.

The alleged incident in the bank happened on September 30, when they used the false ID to draw R400 000.

The teller became suspicious, and telephoned the legitimate holder of the account, whose number was on the bank’s records.

The legitimate holder denied any knowledge of the transaction, and the two were arrested at the bank the same day.
