The Western Cape government has delivered 1,316 smoke alarms to the Lenberg municipality as part of a province-wide effort to reduce fire-related deaths. Since its launch in 2016, nearly 30,000 alarms have been distributed in high-risk areas, including informal settlements.

Western Cape Minister for Local Government Anton Bredell highlighted the program’s success, noting no reported fatalities in areas where alarms were installed. Research from Stellenbosch University confirms that smoke alarms significantly improve survival rates in shack fires, where escape windows can be as short as three minutes.

The initiative includes fire safety education to drive behavioral change. Bredell hopes to expand the program to all municipalities in the province.
