The Western Cape government has unveiled a groundbreaking proposal for the long-disputed Tafelberg site in Sea Point, introducing three mixed-use housing options that blend market-rate, affordable, and social housing.
The plan, seen as a potential milestone for spatial justice in Cape Town, follows years of legal battles and advocacy campaigns. Housing group Ndifuna Ukwazi cautiously welcomed the announcement, with head of political organizing Buhle Booi calling it a “victory brought on by years of grassroots pressure.”
Public consultations are set to begin in June 2026, with the project aiming to cross-subsidize low-income units through market-related sales. If realized, this would mark one of the first integrated housing developments in a historically affluent suburb.
