The theft of equipment used for the maintenance of our trains and railway lines, which has been crippling the sustainability of providing public transportation for citizens between home and work in the recent past, has become a source of great concern to authorities.

Fortunately the work of the SAPS in partnership with the public and other stakeholders is gaining momentum.

A 33 year old man will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court for possession of stolen property following an intelligence driven operation that was conducted by SAPS and PRASA. Police acted on information about a technician from PRASA who allegedly stole parts for trains at the Salt River depot.

A preliminary investigation and a search were conducted in Khayelitsha at the suspect’s residence, where police found a petrol grinder that belongs to PRASA.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, praised the efforts of police members and their partners in fighting crime for ensuring the apprehension of the suspect, and was elated about the result of partnership policing in the fight against crime in the railway environment.
