CAPE TOWN — Law enforcement agencies executing Operation Lockdown III in Cape Town have confiscated illegal firearms, ammunition, and narcotics while taking multiple suspects into custody across the city’s southern suburbs.

The initial intervention took place on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, at 13:00. Acting on actionable intelligence regarding narcotics distribution, tactical teams targeted a specific property along Ryburg Road in Hanover Park. During the search of the premises, officers intercepted and searched a 41-year-old man, discovering 80 Mandrax tablets in his possession. The illegal substances were officially logged as exhibits, and the suspect was subsequently detained at the Philippi SAPS.

A second, highly dynamic operation unfolded later that afternoon at approximately 14:30. While conducting a visible policing patrol along Robert Sobukwe Road in Valhalla Park, officers noticed a taxi abruptly pull over to the roadside. The driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

As police approached the vehicle, a 42-year-old male passenger exited the taxi and sprinted toward a nearby open field. Deeming the behavior highly suspicious, officers pursued and successfully apprehended the fleeing man.

A subsequent search of the 42-year-old suspect uncovered a 9mm pistol, two live rounds of ammunition, three sachets of tik, and a handbag. Furthermore, officers discovered a woman still inside the taxi. She informed the police that the apprehended suspect had just robbed her at gunpoint and confirmed that the recovered handbag was her stolen property. Consequently, the man was formally arrested on severe charges, including robbery with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and drug possession.

Both men remain in police custody and are scheduled to make their first court appearances on Friday, 19 June 2026. They will be brought before the Wynberg and Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Courts to answer to their respective charges.
