Concerted efforts to rid communities of illicit firearms which become lethal in the hands of criminals, led to the arrests of two suspects in Athlone yesterday, Thursday, 05 October 2023.

Members of the Provincial Flying Squad based in Maitland received information about a suspect that is in possession of a firearm at an address in Kudu Street, Kewtown, Athlone. The members pursued the information and pounced on the identified address. Upon arrival at the premises the members ensued with a search during which they discovered a 9mm pistol and 37 rounds of ammunition hidden in a wall panel. They arrested and detained the two men found on the premises for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

In an unrelated matter, members of the Anti-Gang Unit, deployed in Hanover Park to combat gang violence in the area, arrested a 27-year-old man who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Thursday evening. The arrest was executed after they have received information about a suspect who is in possession of a firearm following reports of sporadic shootings in the area.

The suspects, aged 27, 27 and 48, are scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 09 October 2023 on the mentioned charges respectively.
