Early Safer Festive Season crime combating operations through strategic deployment of our Rural Flying Squad along our main entry and exits routes to and from the Western Cape province yet again yielding positive results when members arrested three suspects who were occupants of a truck that was transporting suspected stolen motorcycles and motorcycle parts near Laingsburg on the afternoon of 10 December 2021.

Vigilant members attached to the Rural Flying Squad were performing routine vehicle checks on the N1 near Laingsburg when they spotted a suspicious truck travelling from Cape Town en-route to Malawi.

They escorted the driver of the truck to the Laingsburg police station where they ensued with a thorough search of the cargo. They then discovered eleven different models motorcycles as well as various motorcycle parts such as frames, wheels and lights that was concealed and wrapped with plastic.

Further investigation revealed that at least eight of the bikes was directly linked to motorcycles that was reported stolen between April 2021 and as recent as December 2021 in the Cape Metro-towns such as Rondebosch, Wynberg, Landsdown, Claremont, Muizenberg and the cities of Bellville and Cape Town.

Subsequently the three male occupants of the truck, aged 22, 37 and 38 were arrested and the truck and stolen goods were seized as evidence. The trio is scheduled to appear in the Laingsburg Magistrates’ court on Monday, 13 December 2021 on a charge of possession of suspected stolen goods.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen Thembisile Patekile has nothing but praise for the members attached to the Rural Flying Squad involved in busting open what seems to be the work of a motorcycle syndicate. He commended the members for their vigilance and dedication to police our main routes and to safeguard our communities. Due to intricacy of the investigation, Lt Patekile has appointed a dedicated and specialised Detective Unit to probe this matter.
