The illicit drug trade in the Western Cape was dealt a heavy blow when police confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R2,1 Million in Thembalethu, George.
On Sunday, 18 February 2024, Outeniqua K9 Unit members operationalised information on illicit drug activities and proceeded to a house situated in Zone 08, Thembalethu. Upon arrival the members found that the premises was left abandoned by the occupants. The police found 36 550 mandrax tablets, 300 gram heroin and 532 gram tik on site. The drugs were confiscated.
An investigation surrounding the discovery is underway and the suspect is yet to be arrested.
In an unrelated incident, on Saturday, 17 February 2024, Albertinia and Kwanonqaba police members conducted patrols along the N2 highway near Albertinia. The members spotted two men and upon searching them, police found 500 mandrax tablets in their possession. Both suspects were arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
The suspects aged 26 and 47, remain in police custody.
Meanwhile, Garden Route District Crime Combating Team members conducted crime combating operations in Mossel Bay last night, 17 February 2024. The team arrested seven suspects on drug related charges after drugs were found in their possession. Police confiscated 80 mandrax tablets, 20 grams of tik as well as small quantities of heroin and dagga.
All arrested suspects will appear in their respective courts once charged.
Western Cape police management commended the forces for their interventions to rid communities of drugs. These confiscations are in line with the policing approach of this province to eradicate the illicit drug trade.
