Five suspects have been arrested in Harare informal settlement near Khayelitsha for dealing in drugs after they were found in possession of mandrax tablets worth more than R26 million, police said on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, said the seized drugs, with an estimated street value of R26.4 million, was regarded as a significant blow to the drug trade in the Western Cape which would now be further investigated.
Traut said the five suspects – aged 20, 39, 40, 43 and 54 – were arrested on Sunday night following an intelligence-driven operation.
“Members of Harare conducted an intelligence-driven operation at an informal dwelling in Block 33 where they discovered an underground storage facility for the mandrax under the dwelling,” Traut said. “They seized drugs with an estimated street value of R26.4 million.”
Traut said the suspects would make a court appearance in Khayelitsha on a charge of dealing in drugs.
