A multi-agency police operation has resulted in the seizure of illicit liquor valued at R9,750,000 and the arrest of three Chinese nationals, following a dramatic high-speed pursuit in Paarl on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
The bust was executed by the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods policing team working alongside the Anti-Economic Crimes Task team. The operation was triggered by intelligence linking a suspect to a liquor retail outlet in Stellenbosch and a suspected distribution warehouse located in Paarl.
The sequence of events unfolded on Thursday when officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle traveling toward Paarl. After tailing the vehicle into a secure property and watching it exit, law enforcement attempted a traffic stop. The driver evaded police, triggering a high-speed chase.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle abruptly stopped. The driver then abandoned the car—leaving two other passengers inside—and fled on foot. Officers quickly tracked and apprehended the suspect after a brief foot pursuit.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered a cache of illegal alcohol. Officers immediately brought in the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Unit to assist. Following the vehicle discovery, police raided the linked Paarl warehouse, recovering a massive additional quantity of contraband liquor. The combined haul from the vehicle and the warehouse brought the total estimated value of the confiscated goods to R9,750,000.
In total, three Chinese nationals were taken into custody in connection with the illicit liquor operation. They remain in police detention and are scheduled to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court as soon as formal charges are finalized.
