A family from Vredendal in the West Cape said ‘We are thankful to still be alive’, this after they became victims of yet another farm attack on Saturday 17 February 2018, just before midnight.

Nico Greef told Maroela Media on Sunday that he and his wife Rene were awoken with the dogs barking aggressively. And at first didn’t stir until suddenly there was loud bashing sound. His wife noticed two suspects at the door attempting to break down the security gate.

“When the man saw her, he ran to the front door. She rushed into the room and said, “Nico, there are men trying to break in.” I jumped up immediately and grabbed my shotgun that is always standing next to the bed and ran to the front door, “he said.

Greeff said the suspects had already broken down the security gate and were also in the process of breaking the wooden door down.

He said René stood against the door in an attempt to keep out the attackers. “They managed to break the door too, and I loaded the gun. They wanted to push open the door and René pushed back. They tried to open it again and we saw at least two men, but René managed to push the door closed again.

We screamed loudly ‘We have a weapon and we’re going to shoot! That did not deter them and they just kept pushing open the door. I told René she had to stand aside, she jumped aside and I shot. I injured one of the attackers in the face, after which they ran away’

Greeff says the attacker left a blood trail from the front door to the fence and up to the tarred road. The couple found out later that there were four suspects who wanted to break into their home.

“Our daughter in law came to sleep over with the twins. It was as if we were not even in the house, they definitely came looking for money or even with the plan of hurting us. We are grateful that we are alive and that we could keep a cool head during the whole incident, “he said.

Greeff praised the police who responded quickly and appeared on the scene and also handled the incident professionally.

Captain Caren Coetzee, spokesperson for the police said no one has arrested in connection with the incident.
