False hijacking claim, man in court, Borchards Quarry

Police have apprehended a 34 year old man on Monday 5 February 2018, for a case of perjury.

The suspect had opened a false case of hijacking on Sunday, 4 February 2018, in Nyanga claiming he was hijacked while stopping at the robots at about 00:43 at Borchards Quarry in Nyanga.

He claimed an unknown man approached his vehicle pointed him with a firearm and instructed him to jump out of the BMW X5. He said he complied with the suspect’s instructions and the suspect drove off with the vehicle in an unknown direction. The suspect then opened the case but the vehicle was found at noon on the same day.

During questioning, the investigating officer attached to the Provincial Hijacking Team, became suspicious of the complainant’s claims. Through further investigation and questioning, it was later established that the suspect was lying, he had damaged the company vehicle and decided to open a false case.

The arrested suspect is due to appear in court soon on the said charges.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen KE Jula urges people to refrain from such acts because a lot of effort is being done and time and resources used which could have been used to genuine cases.
