Convicted robber now linked to a farm murder near Hartenbos

A man who is currently behind bars in connection with a case of business robbery is now charged with the murder of a Western Cape farmer.

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie, said the 44-year-old prisoner was linked through forensic evidence to the murder of Freddie Tolman (52). The suspects were caught earlier in association with a robbery at business premises in the Heidelberg area.

Pojie said the suspect appeared in court on 20 October for the murder of Tolman. He is charged with armed robbery and murder. He will appear in court on November 10 and remain in custody. Pojie is investigating the possibility that the suspect is implicated in several other crimes in the Southern Cape and specifically the Boland area.

Maroela Media reported that Tolman was killed on December 17, 2014 outside Hartenbos. Eugene Tolman, Freddie’s son, said that at the time of his murder, his father left about 6:20 in the morning to pick up his workers in Mossel Bay. Tolman’s attackers led him into a trap by placing a stump in the road. The six suspects opened fire on him when he did not stop.

Eugene said his father drove for approximately one km before he lost consciousness near Brandwag / Hartenbos road. He was shot in the chest.

A couple travelling along the Brandwag road to Hartenbos stopped their vehicle when they noticed a stationary truck alongside the road. They wanted to investigate and according to Eugene, the Tolman attackers broke the window of their Chevrolet Avio and hijacked the vehicle.

The police confirmed the incident and the hijacked car was found near the Dana Bay exit in Mossel Bay. The couple were not injured.
