Saturday afternoon turned out way different than expected by two drug dealers when the long arm of the law caught them near Bothasig in Cape Town, Western Cape police said.

Bothasig police station commander Lt-Col Patrick Jacobs said on Sunday that information had been received from the community regarding drug dealing and he set up an undercover crime prevention operation to arrest the dealers.

On Saturday afternoon a meeting was held with the suspects, resulting in two men, aged 25 and 36, being arrested for dealing in and possession of drugs in Welgemeend Street in Kleinbosch. Both suspects were residents of Kensington.

A large quantity of dagga with an estimated street value of R15,000 was seized. The late model vehicle used by the men was also seized. Jacobs said he would apply to have the vehicle forfeited to the state as it was used in the commission of an offence. Both suspects would appear soon in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court.

Jacobs thanked the community for the information relayed to the Bothasig police and their involvement in the fight against crime.

And in Bishop Lavis on Friday, SAPS crime prevention unit officers received information from the public of drug dealing. They executed a search warrant at Deon Court in Nooitgedacht, Bishop Lavis, and confiscated 165g of tik (crystal methamphetemine), 85 small packets of tik, and R11,000 in cash, spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said.

A man was arrested for dealing in drugs and another man was arrested, also on the premises, for possession of tik. In addition, 800 Mandrax tablets were confiscated outside the block of flats.

In other crime prevention operations during the week, in the Mitchell’s Plain police cluster, 296 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs during stop-and-searches and 128 houses were searched for drugs. During these operations 3.8kg of dagga, 129 Mandrax tablets, 572g of tik, and 237.29g of heroin were confiscated, Van Wyk said.
