Police attached to Nyanga SAPS arrested two suspects yesterday afternoon minutes after they perpetrated a business robbery at a cellphone shop at a shopping Centre in Philippi.
The members were on their way back from a tracing operation when they approached an intersection where they heard gun shots coming from the shopping Centre. The members saw shoppers running, and four suspects one positively armed running away from the Centre.
Swift action by the police members led to the arrest of two suspects (one in possession of a firearm); their two accomplices are yet to be arrested.
It was later established that a vigilant security guard stopped the suspects in their tracks after he witnessed the robbery. The suspects dropped the cellphones and fled the scene.
The two suspects aged 23 and 26 are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate Court soon on charges of business robbery and possession of an illegal firearm.
Police investigations continue.
