Yesterday morning members of Hermanus police were on en route to a roadblock on the N2 in Grabouw when a white LDV parked on the side of the road drew their attention.

Upon approaching the vehicle the driver fled on foot into the bushes.

An inspection of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of 4386 units of abalone with an estimated value to the tune of R 800 000.

The vehicle and the abalone were confiscated and an investigation into the circumstances has been launched.

The suspect is however yet to be arrested.

Our onslaught to root out the lucrative abalone trade and the stripping of our precious marine resources in this province will remain to be a priority.
