Two poachers killed after shoot-out

Two armed men were killed in the Kruger National Park on Wednesday during a shoot-out with game rangers after they refused to surrender, the SA National Parks (Sanparks) said.

Rangers were alerted to the men after two separate sets of visitors told them they had seen a man armed with what looked like a hunting rifle walking through the park, said KNP spokesperson, Reynold Thakuli.

The park’s management then deployed a helicopter to find the man. While rangers were in the air, they discovered two men making their way through the veld. “As the rangers ordered the men to surrender they opened fire and a shoot-out ensued with rangers, in which both suspects were fatally wounded and a high calibre hunting rifle was recovered,” Thakuli said.

It was not immediately clear whether any animals had been killed or whether there were more suspects inside the park, Thakuli said. The SA Police Service was investigating and monitoring the area.
