Three police stations in the Northern Cape are currently operating without electricity, severely hampering local law enforcement capabilities. The situation in Ritchie is particularly dire, with the local police station lacking power for an entire month, leaving residents deeply concerned about their safety and the facility’s inability to function properly.

According to locals, the blackout makes nighttime crime-fighting impossible and prevents the community from reaching authorities during emergencies. Victims attempting to report offenses after dark are reportedly turned away and instructed to return the following day. Furthermore, the lack of power means the station’s telephone lines are down, leaving residents—particularly the elderly—feeling stranded and unable to call for help when incidents occur.

A representative for the local police union noted that the infrastructural issues in Ritchie are not isolated. The union has engaged with relevant stakeholders to find a resolution, but no concrete action has been taken yet. Similar challenges are being faced in the Namakwa region. The union had to escalate matters to the Department of Labour, which conducted a reactive inspection in Kakamas and plans to do the same in Alexander Bay. Union officials stated that the landlords or employers responsible for these facilities have been reluctant to address the electrical faults despite the issues being raised directly with them. The union is now hoping external stakeholders will pressure the relevant authorities to expedite a fix.

Meanwhile, provincial police leadership confirmed they are fully aware of the ongoing power outage at the Ritchie station. Following an assessment by the police service, the building’s owner, and the Department of Public Works, it was determined that the electrical fault lies within the building itself. Officials stated that measures are currently being implemented to resolve the matter.

Despite these assurances, community members argue that merely acknowledging the problem is insufficient. Residents continue to demand a swift and permanent restoration of power to ensure their local police station can effectively serve and protect the public.
