South African leaders of tomorrow no different to the leaders of today
Statue of Cecil John Rhodes at UCT

Having myself served for many years on Pupil and Student councils at far less “glorious” institutions than UCT, I might add, I nonetheless learned to understand the importance of open dialogue between students, the Council, and the institution.

I find it baffling how these students – whom I might add are supposed to be “exceptionally bright”; hence their attendance at the University of Cape Town – purportedly “the best university on the continent” – do not wish to engage in discussion and thereby carry on with petty-poo (excuse my pun) demonstrations which have for the most part, not truly been progressive.

Ironically this is because of students’ lack of engagement with the various stakeholders; of which there are many.

The irresponsibility of the student representative council (SRC) is just as baffling – “SRC chairman Ramabina Mahapa was seen leading the charge on Monday as SRC members and supporters walked out of a discussion on heritage, signage and symbolism.”

The SRC Chairman led a walkout from open dialogue. This is in DIRECT contravention with the SRC Constitution which states as follows – “…participating in DIALOGUE regarding transformation within UCT on behalf of the students, and aiming towards developing a clear plan of action.”

Unfortunately, the actions of the SRC in contravention with their own Constitution and Bylaws showcase that – yes, the leaders of tomorrow; seem to be no different to the leaders of today.

All the more reason why we, as the LAST white nation in Africa must stand up for OUR Self-determination – no-one else will.

However if freedom is to happen in YOUR lifetime, in the end, it depends on YOU.
