Robber shot after attacking police with a knife in Langa

A suspected smash-and-grabber was shot and wounded in Langa, according to Cape Town Metro Police deputy chief Yolande Faro.

She said the 19-year-old was caught in the act on CCTV cameras, on the corner of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue, on Friday afternoon.

Officers tracked him down to the Joe Slovo informal settlement.

Faro said the man tried to attack one of the officers with a knife.

“The Metro Police officer’s partner had no choice but to discharge a round and wounded the suspect on the left hip.”

No officers were wounded.

The motorist’s handbag, money and other possessions were recovered.

Faro said the man would be detained at Langa police station after receiving medical treatment.
