AfriForum instructed its legal team today to lay a charge against Cecilia Molokwane, President of Netball South Africa (NSA). In the charge, the NSA is requested to investigate the President of the organisation after AfriForum received complaints that Molokwane had apparently misbehaved herself and made racist comments during the Spar Women’s Championship in August this year.
Some of these statements include the following, among other:
The white players in the one team had been included simply as a result of the quota system and should not have been on the netball court.
Incitement to hurt other players on the court.
Negative comments that stripped players of their dignity.
Derogatory statements based on race.
AfriForum currently supports Marguerite Rootman, former coach of the Baobabs, after she was replaced as coach by an unqualified black coach. The coach who replaced Rootman is only a level 1 coach; to qualify as coach for the Telkom League, however, a coach should at least be a level 2 coach. The order apparently also came from Molokwane.
“Molokwane’s actions and statements are completely unacceptable. One should expect someone in her position to rather try and promote netball in South Africa, but at this stage it seems as if she is only there to favor certain players,” says Henk Maree, AfriForum’s Spokesperson for Sport.
This is but one of the many events that AfriForum is investigating as part of this organisation’s broader campaign for fairness and equality in South African netball. AfriForum is also planning on involving the International Netball Federation in the campaign.
