Three men have appeared in the Mahlabathini Magistrate’s Court for allegedly setting a police officer’s car on fire after a friend of theirs shot and wounded him, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

The three appeared on Monday and would remain in custody until their next appearance on January 18, when they intended to apply for bail, Major Thulani Zwane said.

They faced charges of malicious damage to property after they allegedly set the officer’s car on fire.

The officer shot and wounded a fourth man who allegedly shot him. The Hawks in Richards Bay arrested this 34-year-old man on Monday, when they found him recovering in hospital. He would face a charge of attempted murder.

The policeman was off duty and at a tavern in Mbilane, Ulundi with friends around 23:00 on January 8 when his assailant approached him.   An argument broke out and the officer left with his friends. The man followed him and shot him in the stomach. “The police officer returned fire, wounding the suspect and the officer fled the scene on foot leaving his vehicle behind.” The suspect’s friends allegedly set the police officer’s car alight. The officer sought help from neighbours, who took him to hospital. Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the attack.
